Convert DVR-MS file recorded by Windows Media Center

What is the DVR-MS? DVR-MS, a kind of media file format such as WMV, was created by XP Media Center PC. Uses MPEG-2 standard for video with a little 'extras' like certain copy protections and so on and compresses audio in MPEG-1 Layer II. In general, DVR-MS files with DRM can only be played on the machine that recorded. However, DVR-MS files without DRM can be played on any machine with Windows XP SP1 and above until Windows Media Player is version 9 with hotfix 810243 applied.

DVR-MS files are very large due to the nature of trying to capture video at high resolution (about 3.20 GB for video 1 hour). What everyone wants to do is to compress / convert / burn DVR-MS files. There are several third-party programs to do it, but I think that AVS Video Tools is the best by http://www.soft29.com through a series of tests. The software can convert, split, join, remove commercials, copy, burn, and edit DVR-MS files to almost all video and audio formats like AVI, MP4, DVD (playable on a stand-alone DVD player), WMV, MOV, 3GP, MPEG, SWF, RM, etc, so you can enjoy movies and music anytime and anywhere. All major formats are supported by AVS Video Tools: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), DV AVI, MP4 (inc. Sony PSP and Apple iPod), WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD , VOB, VRO, MPG, MPEG 1,2,4, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, MJPEG, H.263, H.264, Real Video (RM, RMVB), DVR-MS. AVS Video Tools does not support Mac, but you can use freeware MPlayer to convert DVR-MS files....
