Big Business for female entrepreneurs

Women entrepreneurs are big news. They are starting businesses at twice the rate of men and their businesses are growing in size and number. Revenue in women's business ownership has increased more than in other companies in the same period, according to a 2004 survey by the Washington DC Center for Women Business Research. Although the story in the United States is the most promising trend smaller, slower but similar is happening in Great Britain.

Although most are made of desire for women to balance a 'working life', relatively few women leave the corporate world so you can spend more time with their families. Rather, they want to take risks, work more flexible and possibly ethical, and follow their passions. Emotional attachment to anything is always good in a big business, but is useful if you want to start a small business as you will probably need a passion to lead through difficulties. It 'hard to sacrifice your holiday because your boss needs you to mediate a big city problem, but it is much easier if you need to keep their business going and you actually enjoy your work.

Adrian William founded a marketing company and hired deaf people - the first profit for people with disabilities in America. He had discovered that there was a 80 percent unemployment rate in the deaf community. Even paying serious attention to all the usual suspects, including turning a handsome profit, she is fond of 'capitalism with a cause'. The traditional model of macho business can be a hindrance to women employed in the business world - no one really wants to be a 'ball breaker' - but once out you can choose a business model that plays to their strengths.

Sian Lewis is managing director of Diamond, which offers car insurance for women. The prevailing wisdom is to have your call center stocked with low-income employees, ie, if it has not already been transferred to the East. Needing to contact a call center is probably most people on the list of 'things that I like to do'. The bottom line is to keep costs as low as possible. Of course this is extremely important, but not at the expense of offering a good service. Diamond has chosen to employ staff articulate and very motivated - and their prices are still extremely competitive.

Although women are less likely to receive venture capital than men, who mange to find funding through the use of banks, credit cards and perhaps families. We hope the situation changes, as evidenced by small businesses run by women speak for themselves. Already, women are recognized as' safe hands of drivers from acting, and therefore the success Diamond. But creating a small business also requires specific experience, as well as the passion and drive. Fortunately, women develop useful relationships more easily than men.

Women have what it takes to succeed - and will continue to prove it.
